In the context of idol photography, I think it is to project an image of ordinariness. This is one of the main ways in which idol photography broke away from glamour photography and became a separate style, arguably a counter-style. Unfortunately, the idol style is not widely understood outside Asia. (And these days it is not well understood even in Asia (which is readopting glamour), which is why I much prefer the old-school idols...........
